New Prosthetic Hand Used for Many Things
Individuals who needed a prosthetic hand in the past were unable to really use the hand for very much like typing. Instead they could hold a few items and get dressed. Now there is a new prosthetic hand on the market that uses bionics. The hand is being produced by Scottish Company, Touch Bionics and using information from the University Hospital in Heidelberg Germany. The hand has a hydraulic ability that allows it to hold credit cards, type on a computer keyboard, and do several other things.
The hand was released last year and is sold for 17,500 dollars. It is not widely used by many because the cost is prohibitive, but the US is trying to make the device a little more affordable and therefore available to more individuals.
The hydraulics allow for the finger joints to actually move and bend. The amputee will also gain strength in their grip. To date, many of those who have received the hands are in the military. Sgt. Arredondo is just one, who remarked he can pick up a Styrofoam cup without crushing it. It is like having a real hand again for St. Arredondo. Soren Wolf was born without a second hand, and now he also has the ability to do more things.
